The busy A702 and Mauricewood Road T-Junction was faced with a two hour closure on Sunday night, 1 June, after two vehicles collided.

Police Scotland, Fire Scotland and the Scottish Ambulance Service were called to a two vehicle collision on the trunk road at 21:50 on Sunday 1 June, where they attended to four people, one of whom was a five month old baby.

Further details emerged after the road reopened shortly after midnight. Fire Scotland had tended to the mother of the child, who had become trapped in the wreckage of her vehicle, whilst the ambulance service treated the injuries on two men and the young baby.

The family of three are currently recovering in hospital where they await further treatment, whilst the condition of the other driver is unknown.

Statistically one of the safer junctions in Penicuik, the A702 Mauricewood Road junction is shortly due to be upgraded to a three arm roundabout. The development, which will be delivered through developer contributions at neighbouring housing developments, would also see improvement works to the Belwood Road and Mauricewood Road junction, several hundred metres from the new roundabout.

This article has been altered three times. When first posted (morning of 2/6) it stated incorrectly that five people were involved. We altered this to four including a baby. At that time we mentioned the supposed cause of the incident. After review we believed this was an editorial error and removed it. We strive for accuracy and apologise for any errors and other editorial inaccuracies which may have caused offence to any parties involved or our readers.
