A Soldier who was killed in another “Insider Attack” in Afghanistan has been named as Captain Walter Barrie.

The Penicuik resident was killed on Remembrance Sunday when he was shot by an insurgent dressed in Afghan Police uniform. This took place in the Nad-e Ali district of Helmand province during a friendly football match. Captain Walter Barrie (41) belonged to The Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland and was based at Dreghorn Barracks in Edinburgh. He has served with them for 25 years. Captain Barrie has left behind his 15 year old son Callum Barry and his wife issued this moving statement:

Captain Walter Barrie was great man, a doting and amazing father and a fantastic husband. He was much loved and will be missed by many. The family would ask that their privacy is respected during this very difficult time.

He is the 438th British soldier to be killed in Afghanistan since the war began.

Our thoughts are with his family.
